Alan Dawson Named CAA Coach of the Year
Nov. 13, 2003
RICHMOND, Va. - Old Dominion Head Coach Alan Dawson was named the 2003 Coach of the Year, as selected by the CAA Men's Soccer Coaches. Junior defender Trevor McEachron (Woodbridge, VA) was also named the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association Defender of the Year.
Head Coach Alan Dawson receives the coach of the year award for the third time in five seasons. He guided the Monarchs to a 14-2-1 overall mark, which included 14 consecutive wins to open the season. The Monarchs posted shutouts in 11 of those contests, including three against teams ranked in the Top 25. ODU achieved the highest national ranking in the program's history this season, rising to #2 in the Soccer American Top 25 for four straight weeks in October.
McEachron anchored the ODU defense that ranks fourth nationally in goals against average (0.46) and shutout percentage. The Monarchs opened the season with nine consecutive shutouts and allowed just eight goals in 17 regular season games. He earned MVP honors at the Cal-Berkeley and Stihl Soccer Classic tournaments and was selected as the National Player of the Week by College Soccer News on September 15. Along with his performances defensively, McEachron ranked fourth on the team with four goals. He becomes the first Old Dominion men's soccer player to receive the honor.
Senior forward Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia), Junior midfielder Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) and McEachron were named to the CAA All-First Team. Vendegh and McEachron were also named to the 2002 First Team. On the Second Team was Sophomore forward Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO) and Senior goalkeeper Samuel Cameron (Raleigh, NC).
Virginia Commonwealth's Matthew Delicate is the 2003 CAA Player of the Year and James Madison's Mark Totten is the 2003 CAA Rookie of the Year.
The Monarchs are the #2 seed in this year's CAA Tournament, and will take on the #3 seed George Mason at 8 PM on Friday, November 14.
