Marc Bacote will begin his third season as a member of the Old Dominion Football coaching staff overseeing the Monarchs’ defensive backs.

The Monarchs went 11-2 in Bacote’s second season, finishing atop the CAA in its final season in the league and advancing to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs and earning a final ranking of No. 6.

In Bacote’s first season with Old Dominion, the Monarchs made a splash in both their first season of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), but the national scene as well.  With a 10-3 overall record and 6-2 conference mark, ODU finished with a No. 10 national ranking in both the FCS Coaches and Sports Network/ Polls and second in the CAA.  The Monarchs advanced to their first ever post-season appearance reaching the second round of the FCS playoffs.

Under Bacote’s guidance, cornerback Eriq Lewis became a Second Team All-CAA honoree.

Bacote joined the Monarch coaching staff from Rutgers University where he worked in player development, including assisting with the defensive backs and specials teams under former coach and current Tampa Bay head coach Greg Schiano.

Prior to joining the Scarlet Knight staff, Bacote spent two seasons at Morehead State coaching the wide receivers.

A standout at both Hampton High School and Fork Union Military Academy, Bacote was a four-year letterwinner at wide receiver for James Madison from 1997-2000, including the Dukes’ 1999 Atlantic-10 co-championship and NCAA playoff appearance. He caught 48 passes for 602 yards and four touchdowns in his career.

After concluding his playing career, Bacote returned to James Madison to finish his degree, graduating in 2008 with a degree in Kinesiology and began his coaching career assisting the wide receivers as a volunteer coach.

"We are very excited to have Marc join our staff. He has a proven track record as a player and a coach. What impressed me the most with Marc during the interview process was his commitment to the student-athlete and developing future leaders of our country. He also has extensive knowledge of the Hampton Roads region in recruiting having gone to high school at Hampton."
