NEWARK, DE (September 1) - Old Dominion University scored three goals in a span of 2:41 midway through the second half to defeat the University of Delaware, 3-2 in their season opener, Wednesday afternoon.

With the Blue Hens leading, 1-0 on a Rob McLeod goal in the first half, the Monarchs tied the match on a goal by freshman Michael Tooley (Richmond, Va.) with 23 minutes remaining. One minute later senior Spiros Blackburn (Denton, TX.) put the Monarchs ahead on an assist from Martin Crowley (Coventry, England). The Monarchs final goal came 1:21 later by senior Jimmy Tanner (Syracuse, NY.) from sophomore Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY.), the 1998 CAA Rookie of the Year. Delaware's last goal came from Brian Shepanski with six minutes left.

The Monarchs return home to host Elon on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
