The Old Dominion University cheering squad is a safe, professional and athletic program. The squad is comprised of student-athletes who are committed to one another and to promoting spirit within and outside of the university. The squad performs at all football home games and selected road games, as well as all men's and women's basketball home games. Throughout the year, the Monarch cheerleaders also perform for additional sporting events, appear at public events and school functions and travel to Conference USA and NCAA tournaments.
To become a member of the Cheerleading Squad, candidates must have a 2.0 GPA each semester or higher. Stipends are available for cheer members who post and maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher each semester. All members are required to complete weekly programs with the ODU Sports Performance coaches, and attend practice sessions througout the week . Incoming freshmen intending to tryout must avoid registering for night classes and must have Monday, Tuesday and Thursday free from 6:00 - 9:00PM (only exceptions will be members who have conflicts with required courses in their major). All cheerleaders are required to actively participate in any and all community service and fundraising efforts for the Spirit Squad Program.
Cheer participants who are chosen to become members of the ODU Cheer Program must be available for all summer practices, camps and workouts.
The Old Dominion cheerleaders perform at numerous university, public, and private events each year, along with Monarch athletic games. If you would like to request to have the monarch cheerleaders at your event please click on the Appearance Form link in the upper right hand box.
The famed mascot of ODU is "Big Blue." This crowned Monarch is present at all homes games for fans to enjoy. Big Blue is always ready for pictures and entertainment before and during the games. Throughout the year, Big Blue attends special coordinated events throughout the community. Big Blue is available for grand openings, public school events, birthday parties and promotional activities.
