Ben Verlander & Ryan Yarbrough Selected in MLB Draft Today

NORFOLK, VA-- ODU junior All-CAA outfielder Ben Verlander (Maidens, VA.) and junior lefthanded starter Ryan Yarbrough (Lakeland, FL.) have been selected in today's Major League Baseball draft. Verlander was selected in the 14th round (426th overall) by the Detroit Tigers and Yarbrough in the 20th (602 overall pick ) by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Verlander, who was named first team All-CAA, and was a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award which is awarded to college baseball's top player who elevates his game to an elite level throughout the season ranked eighth in the CAA in hitting at .367, third in homers with 11 and led ODU in runs scored with 46, along with four triples and 13 stolen bases. Verlander also knocked in 37 runs and was the CAA Player of the Week three times this season as well as being named Louisville Slugger National Team of the Week after his three homerun performance against Northeastern on March 9. He hit .380 with eight homers and 24 RBI in 27 CAA games. Verlander was also named the team MVP. Ben is currently playing for Staunton in the Valley Summer League.

The 6-6, 205 pound Yarbrough tied for the team lead with 13 starts as he compiled a 4-4 record, including a complete game four-hit shutout over NCAA participant William and Mary. He fanned eight batters in six innings against Hofstra and saved a game in relief at James Madison. He fanned 60 batters in 82.2 innings of work.

Ben's older brother and ODU pitching great Justin Verlander (ODU'04) now with the Tigers is the Monarchs all-time strikeout leader with 427 in 325 innings. He was the second overall pick of the first round in the 2004 draft.
