Lady Monarchs Gear Up for Two Home Games This Weekend

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team will host a pair of C-USA foes this weekend, as the Lady Monarchs will battle Middle Tennessee State (5-5-3) on Friday at 7 p.m. and then will take on UAB (9-4-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex. Most recently, ODU fought to a 0-0 draw in double overtime against Florida Atlantic last Sunday in Boca Raton, Fla.
Last Sunday, the Lady Monarchs tied with Florida Atlantic 0-0 in double overtime. In the first half, ODU freshman goalie Meredith Lenox made three impressive saves to keep the Owls off the scoreboard and send the game to halftime scoreless.
The second half of play saw another 45 minutes wind by without any goals being scored, as Meredith Lenox made two more key saves to send the game to overtime. At the end of regulation, Florida Atlantic had accumulated 11 shots total, but the ODU defense remained solid and fended off each attempt.
In both overtime periods, each team exchanged a handful of shots, but neither was able to break the scoreless tie. As a result, Lenox pulled off her second clean sheet in just three matches for the Lady Monarchs.
Middle Tennessee State – Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 – 7 p.m.
ODU will host Middle Tennessee State on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex. Last time out, the Blue Raiders (5-5-3) were topped by Louisiana Tech on Oct. 13 by a 1-0 margin. They currently hold a conference record of 2-2-1 on the season. MTSU is led by sophomore midfielder Kate Loye, who has racked up six goals already this year and has added three assists. The Blue Raiders are coached by Aston Rhoden in his 12th season. Rhoden, the program’s winningest coach, captured a Sun Belt conference crown in 2010 en route to an NCAA tournament berth.
UAB – Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 – 1 p.m.
The Lady Monarchs will battle the UAB Blazers (9-4-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex. UAB is looking to bounce back after a 3-2 overtime loss to Florida International last Sunday. The high-scoring Blazers are powered by sophomore midfielder Paige Hanks, who has tallied six goals so far on the year. Additionally, freshman forwards Kimberly Fincher and Kasey Johnson have accumulated four and five goals of their own thus far, respectively. UAB is coached by Harold Warren, who in his third season. The former assistant at USC helped guide the Trojans to an NCAA Championship in 2007 as well as four other NCAA tournament appearances.
