NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – On Friday, January 17, Old Dominion women’s basketball head coach, Karen Barefoot, will be honored at the Apprentice School for guiding the Lady Builders to the school’s first ever National Championship in 2001-02. Barefoot spent six winning seasons at the Apprentice School after helping to initiate and develop the first-ever female athletic program in the 75-year history of the school.

Barefoot said, “It is so rewarding to be recognized for this achievement. I’d like to thank the staff and players who decided to be a part of and then accomplish something that had never been done before. The program and team started from scratch. That (National Championship) team really embodied the Apprentice School’s motto of: ‘Head, Hand and Heart’. It's going to be a special honor to see that banner rise in the new Apprentice Athletic Facility on Friday night.”

Barefoot started the program at the age of 22, becoming the youngest head coach in the country. Barefoot says she was inspired by her uncle (Eddie Barefoot), who was the former head wrestling coach at the Apprentice School, her father (Johnny Barefoot), who was a track athlete at the school; as well as her uncles (Bobby and Phil). A two-time NSCAA National Coach of the Year (1999 & 2001), Barefoot compiled a 102-41 mark and captured the 2001 NSCAA National Championship.

Under Barefoot, the Lady Builders had seven NSCAA All-Americans and four Academic All-Americans. Two of the All-Americans (Keisha Joseph and Taffey Thomas) both played professionally in Finland. Joseph now serves as the Athletic Director at the Apprentice School. Barefoot was also given the Peninsula Sports Club Special Achievement Award for winning a National Championship.

FRIDAY’S EVENT
The Apprentice School Athletics Department is excited to be hosting their inaugural athletic event in a brand new gymnasium. As part of their momentous occasion (and for the first time in their school’s history), the Apprentice School will pay honor to the athletic program’s (6) National Championship teams and individual national champions by proudly displaying (8) championship banners in the new facility. Joining Barefoot on Friday, will be coaches, players and other staff from the school’s National Championship teams.
