Old Dominion Hosts No. 12 Virginia Sunday

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion Monarchs wrestling team battles the No. 12-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 3:00 p.m. in the Ted Constant Center.

The Monarchs arrive Sunday with a 3-7 (0-2 MAC) dual meet season record. The last time ODU was on the mat was at the Virginia Duals Jan. 11 as they fell to Arizona State 21-15 in a close match. 

Monarchs Trio Perfect at the Virginia Duals

Sophomore Alexander Richardson (149), redshirt senior Billy Curling (174) and redshirt freshman Kevin Beazley (197) all went 3-0 at the Virginia Duals. Richardson defeated Macaulay Maldarelli (Lock Haven) by a 3-2 decision, No. 14-ranked David Habat (Edinboro) by a 5-3 decision and Preston McCalmon (ASU) by a 6-1 decision. Richardson has won his last four matches.

Curling defeated Travis Moyer (Lock Haven) by a 9-1 major decision, Patrick Jennings (Edinboro) by a 5-3 decision and Kevin Radford (ASU) by a 8-6 decision. Curling has won five of his last seven matches.

Beazley picked up wins against Joseph Rimel (Lock Haven) by a 8-1 decision, Vincent Pickett (Edinboro) by a 2-0 decision and Wesley Moore (ASU) by a 10-5 decision. Beazley has won five of his last seven matches, and leads the Monarchs starting lineup this season with five falls.

ODU (3-7, 0-2 MAC) vs. No. 12 Virginia (11-2, 1-0 ACC) Sunday 3:00 p.m.

Series Record: ODU trails 23-19 and their history dates back to 1958. 

Previous Meeting When ODU won: Feb. 8, 2009 - ODU's No. 11-ranked Chris Brown (165 pounds) won the last scheduled matchup over UVA's Mike Sewell by a 6-4 sudden victory to give the No. 18 Monarchs a 21-18 win over the Cavaliers.

Scouting Virginia

Virginia is 11-2 (1-0 ACC) this season after winning the 2014 Virginia Duals on Jan. 11. The Cavaliers defeated Tennessee-Chattanooga 18-13, Kent State 22-12 and No. 15-ranked Edinboro 20-19 to win the school's first ever Virginia Duals. UVA travels to Duke this Friday Jan. 17 before facing ODU on Sunday.

The Cavaliers are led by redshirt junior Nicholas Sulzer (165 pounds) who is 22-1 on the season and is ranked No. 2 by InterMat.

UVA wrestlers Joseph Spisak (141), Gus Sako (149), Blaise Butler (157), Stephen Doty (174), and Jonathan Fausey (184) are also ranked in the national polls.
