ODU Falls 21-9 to No. 10 Missouri, Curling Wins 6th in a Row
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Old Dominion wrestling team had their five-match dual meet winning streak come to a halt Sunday afternoon as No. 10 Missouri (9-2, 6-1 MAC) defeated Old Dominion 21-9.
Old Dominion (8-9, 4-3 MAC) picked up wins by Brandon Jeske at 125 pounds, No. 4-ranked Chris Mecate at 141 pounds and No. 20 (OpenMat) Billy Curling at 174 pounds.
"Our entire lineup wrestled hard today and we need to use this experience to build on," said ODU Head Coach Steve Martin. "Give credit to Missouri as they won the close matches today. We had many opportunities that we let slip away. Brandon Jeske looked very good and wrestled hard the entire match. Mecate did a good job of not letting outside distractions affect his performance against another top-20 opponent. Billy Curling outhustled No. 22-ranked Mikey England and continues to make gains each week. The controversial takedown at 184 pounds with one second left on the clock was a backbreaker as well as the overtime loss at 285 pounds. As an entire team we are gaining confidence in our ability to get on the podium at the NCAA tournament in March. We look forward to wrestling No. 5 Northern Iowa next weekend."
The match started at 125 pounds as Monarchs wrestler Brandon Jeske defeated Barlow McGhee by a 7-1 decision, which gave Old Dominion a 3-0 lead. Jeske has won three of his last four matches and is 16-11, 3-1 in the MAC this season.
No. 4-ranked Chris Mecate (141) kept ODU in front with a 2-1 decision victory over Missouri's No. 20-ranked Lavion Mayes. Mecate improves his overall record this season to 24-6 and 6-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
At 174 pounds Billy Curling continued his 6-match individual winning streak with a 10-3 decision victory against Missouri's Mike England. Curling now ranked No. 20 by OpenMat.com, is 6-1 in the MAC and 12-5 in dual matches this year.
184-pounder Jack Dechow led Missouri's No. 14-ranked John Eblen by a 4-3 score but could not overcome a late takedown as Eblen defeated Dechow by a 7-5 decision.
ODU's No. 14-ranked Alexander Richardson came close for the second time this year against the No. 1-ranked 149-pounder Drake Houdashelt but fell by a 4-1 decision. Richardson lost for just the first time in his last 11 matches. Richardson is 22-7 this season.
Monarchs wrestler Matt Tourdot also earned a last second takedown to send his match into sudden victory, however he fell 7-5 to Missouri's Devin Mellon.
ODU (8-9, 4-3) remains tied for third place with Kent State in the MAC Standings. The Monarchs have faced six top-20 teams (from TheOpenMat.com) and will face a seventh on Sunday, February 23 as Old Dominion hosts No. 5 Northern Iowa for Senior/Alumni Day at 1 p.m.
