Lady Monarchs Stay on the Road in Texas for 8PM (EST) Tip at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team (12-14, 5-7) will travel to the University of Texas at San Antonio (12-12, 3-8) to square-off with the Roadrunners in Convocation Center on Saturday, February 22, at 8:00 p.m. EST/7:00 p.m. CST.

Saturday night’s showdown will be the first time in school history that the Lady Monarchs have played the Roadrunners from UTSA.

Saturday’s game will be aired live on STAR 1310, with Voice of the Lady Monarchs Doug Ripley on the play-by-play call and former Lady Monarch assistant coach, Susan Montgomery handling color duties. Doug and Susan’s radio broadcast will begin at 7:30 p.m. EST/6:30 p.m. CST from the Convocation Center.

Karen Barefoot Claims Win No. 250
When the Lady Monarchs defeated Marshall 65-52 in overtime on February 1, at the Ted Constant Center, the victory gave ODU head coach, Karen Barefoot, 250 career wins.

ODU's Recruiting Class Nationally Ranked No. 43
The All Star Girls Report has released their top 115 schools’ incoming recruiting classes for 2014 and has ranked the Old Dominion University women’s basketball team No. 43, which is the top ranked team in Conference USA.

Kelley Becomes First Basketball Player in School’s History to Garner ‘C-USA Player of the Week’ Honors
On December 9, 2013, Old Dominion University’s junior forward Shae Kelley was named C-USA Player of the Week. For the two games that week, Shae averaged 25 points, 14.5 rebounds, four assists, three steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game and shot an average of 56.4% from the floor.

Former CAA Rookie of the Year, Ashley Betz-White Will Redshirt 2013-14 Season
On January 29th, Old Dominion University women’s basketball head coach, Karen Barefoot announced that the Lady Monarch’s all-conference junior guard, Ashley Betz-White, will redshirt this season due to bilateral stress fractures in her lower legs.

Lady Monarch’s 2013-14 Education Day
The women’s basketball team had 8,086 elementary school children at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Dec. 4, 2013 for its third annual Education Day Game with the Norfolk Public Schools. The game marked the Lady Monarchs’ highest attended game since the Ted opened in 2002.

Lubomyr Lichonczak
Lubomyr Lichonczak is in the midst of his very first season as head coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio, but has spent the last 11 years on the Roadrunner’s coaching staff and the last nine years as UTSA’s associate head coach. Lichonczak arrived in the Alamo City after spending the 2001-02 campaign as Colorado State’s associate head coach. Prior to coaching at Colorado State, Lichonczak had an 11-year run at the helm for Radford University.

Lubomyr Lichonczak’s Connection to Old Dominion
Lichonczak was an assistant under Hickey at Texas A&M from 1987-90 after a pair of seasons (1985-87) at Old Dominion, where he helped the Monarchs to the 1987 Sun Belt Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. Prior to his time in Norfolk, Va., Lichonczak was an assistant at Ohio State from 1980-85 and aided the Buckeyes to four consecutive Big Ten titles (1982-85) and NCAA Tournament appearances in 1982, ’84 and ‘85. The 1985 squad finished the season with a 26-2 record, 18-0 Big Ten mark and advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to Old Dominion, the eventual national champion.

About the 2013-14 UTSA Roadrunners (12-12, 3-8)
-Kamara King leads UTSA in the scoring department (14.3 ppg) and is currently ranked No. 14 on the school’s all-time scoring list.
-Ashley Spaletta has drilled a total of 120 three-pointers throughout her career at UTSA, which is good for No. 4 on the school’s all-time list.
-Mannasha Bell averages 5.4 boards per contest and currently ranks No. 35 in that department on the school’s all-time list.
-So far, the Roadrunners have held opponents to 63.0 points per game, good for fourth best in Conference USA. The Roadrunners held No. 25 Middle Tennessee to a season-low 24 first half points in Murfreesboro on Jan. 22.
