Four Monarch Wrestlers Reach MAC Championship Final After Day One
NORFOLK, Va. - ODU wrestlers Chris Mecate (141), Alexander Richardson (149), Billy Curling (174) and Jack Dechow (184) all played their way into the MAC Championship Final in their respective weight class following Saturday afternoon's matches.
Eight of the ten ODU wrestlers remain in the tournament after day one and ODU is in fourth place as a team with 79 team points (Northern Iowa 97, Missori 89.5, Ohio 81, ODU 79).
Monarchs redshirt sophomore, top-seeded and No. 4-ranked Chris Mecate (141) defeated EMU's Michael Shaw by a 6-1 decision to open the MAC Championship Quarterfinals. Mecate went on to defeat Missouri's Lavion Mayes by a 4-3 decision to earn his first appearance in the 141-pound MAC Championship Sunday. Mecate will face Northern Iowa's No. 20-ranked Joey Lazor for the title, whom Mecate beat earlier this year.
ODU sophomore and No. 14-ranked Alexander Richardson (149) began his run to the final by defeating NIU's Robert Jillard by a 9-4 decision. Richardson went on to face the top-seed in the weight class and Ohio's nationally ranked Tywon Claxton in the semifinals. Richardson trailed early but came from behind to beat Claxton for the second time this year, this time by a 5-3 decision. Richardson will face No. 1-ranked Drake Houdashelt of Missouri for a third time this season tomorrow for the 149-pound MAC Championship.
174-pounder, top-seed and No. 18-ranked Billy Curling began the day by defeating NIU's Matt Mougin by a 6-1 decision in the MAC Quarterfinals. Curling went on to face UNI's Cody Caldwell in the MAC Semifinals. Curling had the upper hand throughout the match and won by a 6-1 decision to earn his first appearance in the 174-pound MAC Championship. Curling will face Ohio's All-American Cody Walters, whom Curling beat earlier this year.
Old Dominion redshirt freshman, top-seed and No. 18-ranked Jack Dechow defeated Ohio's Ryan Garringer by a 13-1 major decision to open the MAC Quarterfinals. Dechow went on to face Missouri's Cody Johnston in the MAC Semifinals. Dechow managed to earn an 8-3 decision victory over Johnston and earn his first trip to the MAC 184-pound Championship. Dechow will face UNI's All-American Ryan Loder, whom Dechow handed his only loss in two years earlier this year.
ODU's 125-pound freshman Brandon Jeske began the MAC tournament with a 12-0 major decision win against Ohio's Kevon Powell. Jeske went onto the MAC Semifinals to face EMU's Jared Germaine. Jeske scored the first reversal to take a 2-0 lead then lost via fall at 3:47. Jeske will face Barlow McGhee of Missouri in the third round of consolations tomorrow at noon.
Monarchs former NCAA Qualifier and four-seed Tristan Warner began the MAC Quarterfinals against Ohio's Spartak Chino. Warner took control after a nearside cradle, which gave him a 7-4 lead. Warner went on to beat Chino by an 8-4 decision. Warner would battle No. 5-ranked and top-seeded Ian Miller of Kent State in the MAC Semifinals. Miller would get the better of Warner by an 8-2 decision. Warner will be in action tomorrow in the third round of consolations against EMU's Brandon Zeerip.
Old Dominion's Matt Tourdot began the MAC Quarterfinals pulling off an upset by beating the third-seeded Jared Torrence of NIU by a 3-1 overtime decision. Tourdot went on to face Missouri's Devin Mellon in the MAC Semifinals, but lost by a 4-1 decision. Tourdot wll face EMU's Khodar Hoballah in the third round of consolations tomorrow.
197-pounder and ranked No. 33 in the Final Coaches Rankings Kevin Beazley came up so close to pulling off the upset of third-seeded Shawn Scott of NIU in the MAC Quarterfinals as Beazley fell by a mere 5-4 decision thanks to riding time for Scott. Beazley went on to the second round of consolations to beat Jackson Lewis of Central Michigan by an 11-6 decision. Beazley will face Kent State's Cole Baxter in the third round of consolations tomorrow afternoon.
Redshirt freshman Michael Hayes (133) began the MAC Quarterfinals against No. 2-seed Joe Roth of Central Michigan. Hayes would lose his opening match, but regain a strong confidence to pull off a 15-0 tech fall against Ohio's Sebastain Arroyo. Hayes battled NIU's Nick Smith in the second round of consolations but lost by a 8-4 decision.
165-pounder and redshirt sophomore Devin Geoghegan took on third-seeded Harrison Hightower of Ohio. Geoghegan ended up losing his first match and then took on nationally ranked Zach Toal of Missouri in the second round of consolations. Geoghegan managed to score two points but lost by a 10-2 major decision.
