RADFORD, Va. – A Jessie Klamut goal in the 85th minute rewarded Old Dominion (1-3-2) with a 1-0 win over Radford, its first win of the 2014 season and head coach Angie Hind with her first victory since taking over for the Lady Monarchs.
Angie Hind said after the match, “We are delighted to get the just reward for a great team performance today. We struggled a little in the first half to get enough support in our attack and therefore early in the second half we changed things up a little to give us more up front. From there on, we created some very good chances and showed some real determination to get the win. We had an edge today and that was great to see."
Radford was coming off a 15-win campaign and second straight Big South regular season championship last year.
The first half appeared to be somewhat even with perhaps Klamut having the best chance on a one versus one with the keeper, but Radford’s goalie Katie McCormick made one of her seven saves of the game.
In the second half, the Highlanders applied early pressure in the first 10-12 minutes; however, the Lady Monarchs controlled play the rest of the way. ODU had another opportunity when Jackie Stroud fired a shot just high over cross bar from inside the eight (83').
It was in the 85th minute when Madison Hogan was left open at top left of 18 and dribbled in, only to have her shot saved by McCormick; however, McCormick was unable to corral the ball, leaving Klamut to beat her defender to ball and poke it in the net lifting Old Dominion to victory, 1-0.
For the match, Old Dominion attempted 15 shots to Radford’s 14. Radford held a 5-4 corner kick advantage. Klamut led all players with six shot attempts. Lady Monarch true freshman goalkeeper, Samantha Frowen, picked up her first win of her young collegiate career making four saves in 45 minutes of work. Sophomore keeper, Erin Kinz compiled three saves in her 45 minutes of action.
NEXT UP FOR THE LADY MONARCHS Old Dominion will continue their six game road-swing this Wednesday, Sept. 17, against No. 2 ranked UVA in Charlottesville, Va. That match is schedule to begin at 7:00 p.m.
