ODU Falls to VCU 4-2 in Season Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team fell to VCU by a 4-2 final score in the opening game of the 2015 season.

"I was really pleased by our performance at times tonight," head coach Angie Hind stated after the game. "We started a little on the back foot, and you have to give them credit for taking advantage of that. In the second half we were much stronger, and we did a great job to get ourselves back in the game. The penalty kick that allowed them to go up 2-1 was tough to take in, but the positives were apparent through individual performances and the fact that we continued to push all the way to the end. Their keeper was a difference maker tonight for them."

Just seconds after a yellow card was dealt to ODU’s Jordan Jones, VCU sophomore defender Megan Dell got the Rams on the board, capitalizing on a loose ball from six yards out and drilling it in the back of the ODU net in the 16th minute.

Entering halftime, VCU held on to its 1-0 lead while controlling the shot count 11-4. The Rams also led ODU in corner kicks by a 7-2 margin.

The Lady Monarchs came out strong in the second half of play, narrowly missing on a few shots before Kathryn Hill scored ODU’s first goal of the season in the 59th minute. Madison Hogan found Hill from a free kick 21 yards out, and Hill found the back of the net on a neatly placed header that knotted the score at 1-1.

But VCU responded quickly, as Sharon Wojcik scored off an ODU foul in the box and subsequent penalty kick in the 64th minute.

VCU’s Julia Suarez added another goal for VCU in the 79th minute after tipping in a missed shot by Kelly Graves.

Moments later in the 84th minute, Graves found the net herself, blasting a ball in for a score from 30 yards out and increasing the VCU lead to 4-1.

Later in the 87th minute, ODU responded back when freshman Kira Laurento landed her first goal off a Melanie Oakes cross from the end line to the middle of the box, but time expired on the Lady Monarchs and VCU claimed the 4-2 victory.
