NORFOLK, Va. – The Lady Soccer Monarchs (6-9-0, 4-2-0) pulled off an improbable comeback after trailing 1-0 in the 89th minute of play, only to score two goals in a three minute span to defeat Charlotte (5-10-0, 1-5-0) in heartbreaking fashion by a 2-1 score in the first overtime on Friday night at the ODU Soccer Complex.
With just 80 seconds remaining in the match, Old Dominion’s Kathryn Hill played a long ball from midfield to teammate Madison Hogan, who fired the ball into the back of the Charlotte net to tie the match at one apiece and ultimately force overtime. The goal was Hogan’s fourth of the year and she is now ODU’s second leading point scorer with 10 for the season.
73 seconds into the first overtime, ODU’s Iris Achterhof booted a corner kick into the 49ers box, where Old Dominion’s defender Deirdre Bradley headed the ball past the Charlotte keeper to complete the stunning comeback in Conference USA play. The goal was Bradley’s second in as many contests, while the assist was Achterhof’s third in the past two ballgames.
