NORFOLK, Va. --Adam Bainbridge picked up his third victory in as many starts to lead Old Dominion over Rutgers, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Bainbridge allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings of work, while striking out five. The senior southpaw is now 3-0 on the season with a 1.59 ERA.
Old Dominion (7-2) opened the scoring with a run in the second inning on a sac fly RBI by Kyle Beam. Rutgers (3-6) grabbed a brief lead in the top of the sixth, as Tom Marcinczyk hit a two-run home run for the Scarlet Knights' only runs of the game.
The Monarchs answered in the bottom of the frame, as Shaun Wood's groundout RBI tied the game at 2-2 and then Turner Bishop's double, his second of the day, scored Vinnie Pasquantino to give the Monarchs a lead that they would not relinquish. ODU added an insurance run in the seventh and then two more in the eighth on a two-RBI suicide squeeze by Bryce Windham.
Following Bainbridge's seven innings, Morgan Maguire pitched two scoreless innings for his first save of the season and the fourth of his career.
Bishop and Zach Rutherford led ODU at the plate, as Bishop went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Rutherford went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
The three-game series, tied at 1-1, concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. at The Bud. Freshman John Wilson is slated to get the nod against James Torres.
