RICHMOND, Va. -- In the first of two midweek games this week, No. 25 Old Dominion fell at Richmond, 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Pitt Field.
After four scoreless innings to start the game, Richmond (15-30) scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Spiders posted the five-spot behind five hits and one ODU error in the frame.
In the top of the seventh, Old Dominion (32-15) had the bases loaded with no outs, but managed to produce just one run in the inning on Jared Young's sacrifice fly. For the game, ODU left 11 runners on base.
On the mound, starter Morgan Maguire went 3.2 innings, allowing zero runs on five hits, while striking out two. Jake Josephs took the loss in 0.2 innings of work, while Joe Strzelecki tossed three innings of shutout relief.
Richmond's starter Layne Looney, the Spiders' normal Sunday starter, threw six innings of shutout ball for the win, while closer Jonathan De Marte earned the three-inning save.
The Monarchs return to action tomorrow with a home game against VCU at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed on beIN Sports.
GAME NOTES ODU still leads the all-time series, 65-61 ... ODU is now 6-4 in midweek games ... ODU is now 5-4 against Virginia opponents ... Jake Josephs made his 91st career appearance, which ties him with Jonathan Tinkham for the ODU record ... Joe Strzelecki made his first appearance since April 4 at No. 18 Virginia ... Vinnie Pasquantino extended his reached base streak to 43 games.
