Monarchs Finish Second Behind No. 8 Virginia Tech at Hokie Open
ROANOKE, Va. – The Old Dominion wrestling team competed at the Hokie Open hosted by Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon. Kevin Budock and Killian Cardinale were crowned Hokie Open Champions, while Larry Early III defeated Stanford’s 2017 All-American.
“I was pleased with our effort today as we got after it and competed hard,” said head coach Steve Martin.
The Monarchs marked a second place finish with 188 points behind No. 8 Virginia Tech, who tallied 220 points.
Highlighting the day, Larry Early defeated No. 7 Paul Fox of Stanford at 157 in the semifinal bout, 10-4.
“Larry Early beat a returning All-American, Paul Fox from Stanford and that was a big win for him. We put a lot of points on the board today and that was nice to see.”
Both Cardinale and Budock competed in the freshman/sophomore division, which they won. Cardinale won his final bout at 125 by decision, 9-8 over NC State’s Zurich Storm. Budock took a decision over Knox Fuller of Army, 10-7.
NCAA qualifier, Alex Madrigal took a second place finish at 141.
At 125, Steven Simpson made it to the finals in the open division where he fell to Connor Schram of Stanford by decision.
“We had several guys in the finals and a lot of guys that battled back on the backside. We are excited about this group!” explained Martin.

Old Dominion hosts the Monarch Classic on Sunday, Nov. 12 in the Jim Jarrett Gymnasium. Old Dominion wrestles No. 24 Northwestern at 1 p.m. and Gardner-Webb at 2:30 p.m. Free parking is available in Garage B on 43rd Street.
