CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Old Dominion men’s basketball team (3-1, 0-0 C-USA) defeated Indiana State (1-2, 0-0, MVC) by a 62-44 score in the Gildan Charleston Classic on Friday afternoon on John Kresse Court at TD Arena.
“After the Temple loss, we challenged our guys and they certainly responded well with an outstanding effort today,” said ODU head coach Jeff Jones. “Our defense was awesome and we did a good job on the boards. Ahmad Caver really broke through and had his best game of the year. This was a good team win for us.”
Ahmad Caver scored a game-high 22 points (9-11 FT’s), to go along with six assists, zero turnovers and three steals. Trey Porter scored a career-high 16 points, to compliment six rebounds and two blocks. B.J. Stith finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals. Brandan Stith had seven points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Aaron Carver hauled down a career and game high 12 rebounds.
Old Dominion forced 17 Sycamore turnovers, while only turning over the ball six times. The Monarchs held advantages for second chance points (18-2) and points off turnovers (16-2). For the game, ODU’s defense held Indiana State to 29.8% (17-57) shooting from the floor and 20.0% (4-20) from three-point range.
The Monarchs claimed an eight-point lead, 33-25, at the half behind a half-high 16 points from Ahmad Caver. B.J. Stith scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Trey Porter scored seven points and had five rebounds.
In the first half, ODU’s defense held the Sycamores to just 27.3% (9-33) shooting from the floor and 23.1% (3-13) from three.
A Trey Porter and-one gave Old Dominion a 15-point advantage, 45-30, at the 13:12 mark of the second half. A B.J. Stith three-pointer gave ODU its largest lead of 19, 56-37, with 8:08 remaining in regulation, before ultimately claiming an 18-point victory on Friday afternoon in Charleston.
Old Dominion will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of Dayton will air on ESPN3.
