RALEIGH, N.C. - The Old Dominion (1-2) wrestling team fell to No. 6 NC State (7-0), 25-15 on Thursday night at the Reynolds Coliseum. The Monarchs led the dual through five bouts, which led to the final bout being the decision maker. The Wolfpack ultimately won the last three bouts to win the dual.

“Tonight we wrestled a very good team in No. 6 NC State. This is a team that has 10 returning NCAA qualifiers so we knew we had to be ready. This was a measuring stick for us for sure in a great environment,” explained head coach Steve Martin.

To start off the night, Michael McGee won with a tech fall over Thomas Cox of NC State to give the Monarchs a 5-0 lead.

Michael McGee continues to improve on a daily basis and just has a great feel for the sport.  A freshman securing a Tech fall on the road is exciting to see.”

Following McGee, Caleb Richardson came back in the third period of his match to defeat Jamel Morris, 7-3.

Caleb Richardson came from behind, which was important for him as he wrestled his best match of the year.”

In a match that highlighted two nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 2 Kevin Jack took a decision over No. 15 Alex Madrgial, 6-1 at 141.

Alex Madrigal gave the No. 2 kid in the country everything he wanted and he knows he can go with those guys in the top of his weight classes.”

At 149, Kenan Carter went on to defeat two-time NCAA Qualifier and No. 17 Jamal Morris, 3-2.

Kenan Carter beat a 2x NCAA qualifier by riding him for two minutes and that will definitely help his confidence,” said Martin.

After dropping two matches at 157 and 165, No. 20 Seldon Wright headed into his match against Sam Melikian with the team score tied at 11-11. Wright received the bonus points with a major decision over Sam Melikian, 16-6, bringing the Monarch lead to 15-11.

Seldon Wright put a lot of points on the board and also secured bonus points for us. This was the best he has competed this year.”

“We fought hard but we also learned from the loss. Technically, mentally and physically we have come a long way and we will be much better in March at the NCAA tournament when it counts. “

The Wolfpack took their first lead at 184 after No. 3 Pete Renda topped Antonio Agee, 17-1.

At 197, John D’Agostino fell to No. 8 Mike Macchiavello, 17-2.

Entering the final match of the night, the Wolfpack took the advantage, 21-15. Ali Wahab needed a pin to in order to secure a Monarch win. Wahab dropped his match by major decision to Malik MacDonald.

“The rest of our guys competed but came up short.  At the end of the day we are close to competing with these top teams but it comes down to us finding our edge in all 10 weight classes. We will be starring across the mat from another tough team when we compete against #4 Missouri in less than 48 hours.  We are thankful for the opportunity to use this as another measuring stick. Competing against these top ten teams gives us an awesome opportunity to get better."

Caleb Richardson now moves to 3-0 in dual action and 7-2 overall this season. Along with Richardson, Wright also remains undefeated in duals and 11-2 overall.
