NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion (7-6, 3-1 MAC) wrestling team dropped a non-conference dual to Virginia (4-7, 0-2 ACC) by a score of 25-10 in the Ted Constant Center on Sunday afternoon.
“We didn’t wrestle our best, I thought we were very flat during the course of the match. I thought Madrigal wrestled good in his match, he wrested a total seven minutes. I thought Agee wrestled for all seven minutes, too. We left some wins on the table today,” said head coach Steve Martin.
Starting the match at 157, Larry Early picked up a decision over Fred Green to give the Monarchs a 3-0 lead.
“I thought portions of Early’s match he looked good. He did what he had to do to get the win.”
At 165, the Cavaliers picked up bonus points with a major decision over Luke Drugac.
In a match that featured two ranked wrestlers, No. 19 Will Schany defeated No. 20 Seldon Wright by a 7-6 decision. The match was tied 6-6 in the final period after Wright scored a takedown, Schany ultimately earned an escape point in the third period.
Picking up a win at 184, Antonio Agee did not let his opponent score any points in his 6-0 decision win over Drew Peck. The Monarchs were trailing by just one point after the 184-pound match.
At 197, UVA picked up bonus points to extend their lead.
In a close match at heavyweight, Ali Wahab dropped his match by decision.
In the 125-pound bout, Michael McGee faced No. 11 Louie Hayes. McGee led Hayes through two periods, Hayes scored a takedown in the final period to defeat McGee by a 9-6 decision.
“We knew the 125-pound match would be the toughest of the night. It went back and forth and both of those kids are potential All- Americans.”
