ATHENS, Ohio – The Old Dominion (9-8, 5-2 MAC) wrestling team defeated Ohio (4-7, 3-3 MAC) by a score of 19-6. A medical incident in the 174-pound bout caused the remainder of the match to be cancelled.
According to the NCAA ruling, ODU has been awarded the team victory. After the occurrence at 174-pounds, the match was concluded. Later, a ruling from the NCAA confirmed that the final three bouts would be a no contest, which means neither wrestler will receive a win or a loss.
“The Old Dominion wrestling family sends our thoughts and prayers out to Austin Reese and his family. We are praying for his speedy recovery,” said Head Coach Steve Martin.
To start off the match, Michael McGee earned his third win in a row with a bonus point victory over Trevor Giallombardo to put Old Dominion on the scoreboard first.
Highlighting the dual, Caleb Richardson defeated #16 Cameron Kelly by a 5-2 decision in the 133-pound bout. Richardson has wrestled 10 wrestlers in the recently released coaches' poll. This season, he is 3-7 against these nationally ranked wrestlers.
At 141, Alex Madrigal won by decision over Mario Guillen to win the third straight match for the Monarchs.
In the 149-pound bout, Kade Kowalski defeated Kenan Carter by decision to put three team points on the board for the Bobcats.
At 157, Larry Early defeated Cullen Cummings by decision to improve to 25-8 this season.
In a close match, Luke Drugac lost by a 7-6 decision to Joe Terry. At the end of the 165-pound bout, the score was 13-6.
