NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion came out on the wrong end of a Friday evening pitchers' duel at the Bud Metheny Complex, falling to No. 11 Southern Miss, 2-0, in the opening game of this weekend's three-game set.

Six Old Dominion (12-27, 5-14 C-USA) pitchers held Southern Miss (30-11, 14-4 C-USA), the league's top offensive team, to just two runs on nine hits, but the Monarchs were unable to solve Nick Sandlin, who tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout for the Golden Eagles. Sandlin is now 6-0 with a 1.00 ERA on the year.

On the mound for ODU, Luke Krantz (4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K) gave the Monarchs a strong start for the second consecutive Friday. The true freshman southpaw worked out of a key bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth to keep the game scoreless. Ryne Moore (2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 K) was effective in relief. Jack Jett (0.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 BB) received the loss.

Offensively, Will Morgan (1-3, 2B), Tommy Bell (1-3) and Kyle Battle (1-4) had the lone hits for the Monarchs.

Southern Miss scored its runs on an RBI double by Matthew Guidry in the seventh and a Mason Irby RBI single in the ninth.

Game two is tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET. Morgan Maguire will get the start against USM left-hander Stevie Powers.
