NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion (1-0-1) men’s soccer team came to a 2-2 draw against Georgia Southern (1-0-1) on Sunday afternoon. Both Monarch goals came from Max Wilschrey, who now owns three goals on the season.
Scoring began in the third minute for the Monarchs when Niko Klosterhalfen sent a pass to Wilschrey who shot it to the opposite side of the goalkeeper.
Opening the second half, Wilschrey and Klosterhalfen did it again to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles answered in the 77th minute off a free kick from Javier Carbonell. Just five minutes later, Carbonell knocked another goal into the back of the net to tie the game.
In the 81st minute, Deniz Dogan received his second yellow card of the game, which led to the Monarchs playing a man-down for the remainder of the contest.
After regulation time ran out, the match went into overtime. Throughout the two overtime periods, the match remained scoreless.
Da'Vaughn Anderson and David Tombini made their first career starts for the Monarchs.
Mertcan Akar tallied four saves for ODU.
ODU outshot the Eagles, 17-15.
Up Next The Monarchs host Santa Clara and Temple in the ODU Soccer Classic on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. Their game on Friday, Aug. 31 begins at 7 p.m. and the final game on Sunday begins at 6 p.m.
