MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Amanda Neck’s goal in the in 99th minute lifted the Old Dominion women’s soccer team (5-6-2, 2-3-0 C-USA) over Middle Tennessee (7-3-1, 2-1-1 C-USA) by a 1-0 score on Friday night at Dean Hayes Stadium. The loss was the first for the Blue Raiders in conference play, as well as at home this season. The victory marked the Monarchs first road win of the season.
“I’m incredibly proud of this group of players,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “What a performance against a very good MT team. Amanda Nhek took her goal with such composure, that’s what she can do when we get her in those situations. It was a great finish from an excellent strike off the bar from Kira Laurento.”
Kira Laurento's shot drilled the crossbar to allow Nhek to get free for the game winner, which marked Laurento's first assist of the season and Nhek's fourth goal of the year (ranks second on the team).
ODU’s freshman goalkeeper, Jasmine Crawley, made a career high seven saves in the shutout victory.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Monarchs held advantages for shots (9-6), shots on goal (5-2) and corners (4-2).
“They had us under some consistent pressure for long spells in the second half and we stood strong,” Hind explained.
At the end of the second half, both teams fired off 16 shots.
“Going into overtime; however, we felt the team really had a determination about them and so we went for it,” Hind stated.
The Monarchs outshot the Blue Raiders 3-1 in overtime and for the match, ODU attempted two more shots than MT, 19-17.
“This was a real team performance tonight, but I have to say how superb our defense was, especially Emily Roberts and Riley Kennett, who had a lot to deal with,” Hind concluded.
The previous two matches between these two schools ended in draws in Norfolk.
Old Dominion will return to action next week, when the Monarchs travel to Florida Atlantic on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m., before hosting UAB on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex.
