PHILADELPHIA -- The 25th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team clobbered Temple, 9-1, on Friday evening at Howarth Field.

The nine goals were the most for ODU during head coach Andrew Griffiths' tenure and the most since 2012, when the Monarchs scored 11 against Towson.

"It was a solid team performance this evening," said Griffiths. "It was good to see contributions from a lot of different players in the game in different areas of the field. We also played a strong second half, a consistent effort throughout."

ODU (8-5, 2-2 Big East) scored five first-half goals, including three in the first nine minutes, and never looked back.

Rebecca Birch and Merle Knobloch both finished with two goals, while Jessica Gabriel, Marlee McClendon and Riley Taylor all scored their first career goals. Gabriel opened the scoring for the Monarchs with a goal just over five minutes into the contest.

Erin Huffman and Alexandria Brewer also added goals, while McClendon finished with a team-best four assists.

Temple (2-12, 0-5 Big East) scored its lone goal on a penalty stroke down 8-0 with less than five minutes to play.

"The feeling for us is that our team played together and pushed together for the full game," said Griffiths. "It's a good feeling."

Overall, ODU outshot Temple, 18-3, and also held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. Lacey Frazier earned the win in the cage, playing the full 70 minutes.

The Monarchs are now 7-1 in games away from Norfolk this season.

Up next, ODU has a quick turnaround with a game at American on Sunday at noon.
