NORFOLK, Va. --For the first time since May of 2017, the Old Dominion baseball team won a series, earning a two-game sweep of Binghamton with a wild 12-9 win over the Bearcats on Sunday at the Bud Metheny Complex.
After a 2-1 pitchers' duel in game one on Friday, the bats came alive on Sunday. Old Dominion (3-2) pounded out 18 hits, including home runs from Kyle Battle and Matt Schwarz and a career day from Tommy Bell, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs.
The Monarchs broke open a close game with a six-run fifth inning and would lead 9-1 through seven.
However, Binghamton (0-5) cut the lead to 9-7 with a six-run inning of their own in the top half of the eighth. Then, after ODU extended its lead back to 12-7 with three in the bottom half, the Bearcats again threatened, plating two in the ninth before stranding the bases loaded.
True freshman Aaron Holiday earned his first career win as a Monarch, tossing 2.2 shutout innings of relief with five strikeouts. Trey Fisher then came on to close the door in the ninth for his first career save.
Tommy Bell (4-5, 2 2B, 4 RBI) set career highs in hits and RBIs.
Kyle Battle (2-5, HR, 2 RBI) hit his first home run, a 2-run shot in the 5th inning, of the season and the fifth of his career.
Matt Schwarz (2-3, HR, RBI, 3 R) hit his first home run, a solo shot in the 8th, of the season and third of his ODU career.
Matt Burch (3-4, R, RBI, 4 SB) was one stolen base shy of tying the school record of five.
Aaron Holiday (2.2 IP, 2 H 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K) earned his first career win.
Trey Fisher (0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K) earned his first career save.
Michael Marrale (1-1) played in his first career game and recorded his first career hit in his first career at-bat.
