NORFOLK, Va. - The athletic rivalry between Old Dominion University and the College of William and Mary will get even more competitive this season, as the two schools will battle for bragging rights for the Optima Health Challenge Trophy.
Sponsored by Hampton Roads based Optima Health, the trophy will be presented annually to the school which accumulates the most points in head-to-head competitions in all sports.
"The ODU - William and Mary rivalry is our longest continuous competitive series and we are grateful to Optima Health for sponsoring this challenge with the two schools," ODU Athletics Director Wood Selig said. "Our University's roots began as the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary and we have gone on to become a nationally recognized program in our own right, winning 32 national championships, producing 114 first team All-Americans and 150 Academic All-Americans. I want to thank ODU Sports Properties and general manager Chuck Gray for involving Optima Health and putting together a promotion that benefits both schools."
Along with the all sports challenge, the football game this November will be the Battle for the Silver Mace, with the winner presented a replica of the Norfolk Mace currently being held in the Chrysler Museum of Art. The Norfolk Mace was presented to the Norfolk Common Council by Royal Lt. Governor Robert Dinwiddie in 1754 to acknowledge Norfolk as one of the most loyal provinces.
The two schools will receive points for all competitions against one another. During the year, the Colonial Athletic Association foes will face off 14 times, with each event being worth 10 points. The Monarchs and Tribe will compete head-to-head in football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, field hockey, women's lacrosse and baseball, with the potential of meeting also in CAA Tournaments. The winner will be the first school to reach 80 points.
