CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- Old Dominion wrestler Chris Mecate defeated All-Americans Chris Dardanes (Minnesota) and Evan Henderson (UNC) on his way to a third place finish at the 2014 Southern Scuffle.

The Old Dominion University wrestling team finished in 10th place (58.5 team points) out of 34 teams and ODU had three wrestlers place in the 2014 Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The tournament hosted ten of the current top-25 teams in the country.

ODU's Chris Mecate (141) placed third, Brandon Jeske (125) placed fifth, and Alexander Richardson (149) placed seventh for the Monarchs.

No. 8 Chris Mecate (six seeded in the tournament) finished last season fourth at the 2013 Scuffle when he lost to Nick Dardanes in the third place match. This year he faced Chris Dardanes from Minnesota and pulled off the 4-3 decision victory to earn third place. Mecate's only loss in this tournament came to the eventual champion Zain Retherford in a 2-0 decision.

Brandon Jeske, a true freshman, finished fifth in his first ever Southern Scuffle. Jeske went on to the consolation bracket and won four straight matches, including a 7-3 decision win over No. 20 Eddie Klimara (Oklahoma State). Jeske went on to finish the tournament 7-2.

Alexander Richardson placed seventh in the Southern Scuffle after advancing to the second day for the first time in his career. Richardson battled toe-to-toe with No. 2-ranked and eventual 149-pound champion Drake Houdashelt (Missouri).

One day removed from defeating No. 5-ranked Taylor Meeks (Oregon State) (finished fourth in last year's NCAA's), ODU's Kevin Beazley was in the winner's bracket and quarterfinals against Nick Bonaccorsi. Beazley lost a close 2-0 decision and would fall in the consolation 7-5 by a decision to Jace Bennett (Cornell).

Tristan Warner (157) finished the tournament 2-2 after falling to Cody Pack of South Dakota. 133- pounder Michael Hayes put up a fight against No. 12-ranked Shelton Mack but was defeated in the consolation round. 174-pounder Billy Curling took on fifth-ranked Logan Stanley (Minnesota) but fell in the consolation round and finished the tournament 2-2. Monarch wrestler Matt Tourdot (285) picked up a major decision victory over Riley Shaw of Cleveland State before falling to Ethan Hayes (Virginia) in a close 6-5 match.
