Men's Swimming Edges Out ECU in Final Race, 149.5-144.5
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University men's swimming and diving won the 400 freestyle, the last event of the meet, to defeat East Carolina 149.5-144.5. In the women's meet, ECU defeated ODU 183-117.
The team of Jason Zeidler, Eddie Hubert, Vitor Sa and Sidni Hoxha just edged out the team from ECU by .18 seconds, winning in a time of 3:02.55.
Tyler Anderson got the first race win of the day for the men, winning the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:31.64 while ODU swept the top-three as Bernardo Figuiredo took second and Andrew Cook was third.
Hoxha finished his final home meet with wins in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle, while Francisco Byrne and Richie Smith earned points by finishing second and third in the 100 backstroke. Smith took second in the 200 backstroke while Ryan Telep finished third.
In the 200 butterfly, Reed Mathews set a pool record with a time of 1:50.94 while Chris Prewitt came in second at 1:52.62.
Jason Haigh added a second place in the breastroke while FIguiredo was second in the 500 free.
Vitor Sa gave ODU a key win in the 100 butterfly leading up to the final, winner take all race in the 400 relay.
The meet started with a pair of wins at the 1 and 3-meter by Rachel Eckert.
Yesim Giresunlu garnered a win for the Lady Monarchs in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10.14.38.
Savannah Bowers earned a second place in the 200 freestyle while Colleen VandePoel won the 100 backstroke. VandePoel also won the 200 free while Raquel Couto finished third in the event
Julia Vido earned a second place in the 100 breaststroke while Juliana dos Santos won the 50 freestyle and Morgan Johnson finished second in the 100 free.
Giresunlu was also victorious in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.41.
Prior to the meet, ODU honored seniors Daniel Chalfant, Jason Haigh, Sidni Hoxha, Ryan Telep, Christine Canty and Abby Vance.
