ATLANTA, GA—ODU junior catcher Mike Perez (Fairfax Station, VA.) and senior firstbaseman Josiah Burney (Gloucester, VA.) each knocked in two runs, but Georgia Tech rallied for two runs in the seventh to defeat the Monarchs, 6-5 in the season opener for both teams in the Midtown Baseball Classic Friday afternoon.
The Monarchs took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run double by senior firstbaseman Burney, driving home designated hitter Ben Slaton (Magnolia, MS.) and senior thirdbaseman Jordan Negrini (Kihei, HI).
In the bottom of the seventh the Yellow Jackets got an RBI triple from Daniel Spingola which plated Elliott Brazilli to tie the game at 5-5. Thomas Smith then singled home Spingola giving the Yellow Jackets a 6-5 lead. Georgia Tech’s senior reliever Daniel Isaacs pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing ODU just one hit to pick up the win.
The Monarchs opened the game with two runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Mike Perez, scoring sophomore second baseman PJ Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) and junior rightfielder Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, IA.). ODU added a run in the second on a solo homer over right field by Ben Slaton.
Georgia Tech tied the game in the bottom of the second as A. Pabst tripled in Matt Gonzalez, followed by an RBI groundout by Brandon Gold. Elliott Brazilli then tied the game with a solo homer to left.
P.J. Higgins led ODU with two hits on the day. The Monarchs return to action in the Midtown Classic on Saturday against VCU at 12 noon and Radford on Sunday at 10 am.
