OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – In Session Two of the NCAA Tournament, Old Dominion’s redshirt freshman Jack Dechow stunned No. 4 seeded Max Thomusseit of Pittsburgh in sudden victory fashion to advance to Friday’s Quarterfinals of the Championship Bracket. Chris Mecate, Alexander Richardson, and Billy Curling will all be wrestling in the Wrestleback Bracket on Friday at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

After incredible seasons by ODU’s Brandon Jeske and Tristan Warner, they both were eliminated on Thursday night.

No. 13 Jack Dechow – Championship Second Round - 184
In what was the match of the night, No. 13 seeded Jack Dechow squared-off with No. 4 seeded Max Thomusseit of Pittsburgh. After a scoreless first period, Dechow escaped to start the second period. Thomusseit started the third period on bottom and escaped to tie the score and send the match into a sudden victory period. It was then and there that Dechow scored a takedown to stun the No. 4 seeded Thomusseit, 3-1, in sudden victory.

With the win, Dechow will grapple with another Cinderella-story in No. 12 seeded Ophir Bernstein of Brown University. Bernstein has qualified for the NCAA Tournament all three years of his collegiate career.

No. 5 Chris Mecate - Championship Second Round - 141
No. 5 seeded Chris Mecate and No. 12 seeded Richard Durso from Franklin and Marshall battled it out in the Championship Second Round for a chance to move onto the Quarterfinals.

In the first period, Mecate scored a takedown just before the buzzer sounded. Durso responded with a takedown of his own to tie the score at 2-2; Durso then rode Mecate out the rest of the period (1:10). The two wrestlers started the third period in the neutral position. Neither wrestler could get on the board in the final two minutes; however, Durso was lifted to a 3-2 victory with the third and final point coming on riding time.

On Friday morning, Mecate will take on NC State’s Sam Speno in the Second Round of the Wrestlebacks.

No. 16 Alexander Richardson - Championship Second Round - 149
No. 16 Alexander Richardson wrestled No. 1 Drake Houdashelt of Pittsburgh for the third time this season in the Second Round. After the first period, Houdashelt led 4-0. Houdashelt then converted a takedown into a nearfall and held a 10-0 advantage before eventually claiming a major decision over Richardson, 11-0.

After facing the No. 1 seed, No. 16 seeded Alexander Richardson will next face No. 2 seeded Nick Dardanes from Minnesota, who got upset by The Citadel’s Mathhew Frisch 8-5 on Thursday night.  Friday morning’s match between Richardson and Dardanes will be the first time this season that they have wrestled.

No. 15 Billy Curling - Championship Second Round – 174
No. 15 seeded Billy Curling drew No. 2 seeded Andrew Howe in the Second Round. After the first round Curling trailed 4-1. In the second period, Curling would rack up three escapes; however, Howe managed to take Billy down three times and led 11-3. Howe would accumulate three more takedowns in the third period and went onto defeat Curling via major decision, 18-7.

On Friday morning, Curling will battle it out with no. 16 seeded Mathew Miller from NAVY. This will be the first meeting between these two.

Brandon Jeske - First Round Wrestleback - 125
In the First Round of the Wrestlebacks, Brandon Jeske drew No. 7 Ryan Taylor from Wisconsin. The two wrestlers wrestled to a scoreless first period. In the second period, Jeske escaped and then Taylor got a takedown to take a 2-1 lead into the third period. Taylor started the third period with an escape and then would get another takedown to defeat Jeske 5-1.

Brandon Jeske finished the season with a 21-15 record and made the NCAA Tournament as a true freshman. During this season, Jeske defeated three nationally ranked opponents and finished 3rd at the MAC Championships.

Tristan Warner – First Round Wrestleback - 157
In the First Round of the Wrestlebacks, Tristan Warner wrestled Army’s Paul Hancock, who is a two time national qualifier. Warner started off the match with a quick takedown and 2-0 lead. Hancock would then escape to cut his deficit to 2-1 after the first period. In the second period, Hancock took a 3-2 advantage and then racked up two more takedowns in the third period to go onto defeat Warner by a score of 7-2.

Tristan Warner returned to the NCAA Tournament this year after sitting out all of last due to an injury. This was Warner’s second NCAA Tournament appearance in just three years. Warner finishes the season with a 19-13 record and finished the regular season winning eight of his last 11 matches. The Mechanicsburg, Penn. native also placed fourth at the 2014 MAC Championships.
