ODU Heads to Ypsilanti for MAC Dual vs. EMU Sunday
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Old Dominion wrestling team (1-4, 1-2 MAC) will head to Ypsilanti, Michigan on Sunday for a 12 p.m. dual meet against MAC foe Eastern Michigan (3-1, 0-0 MAC).
The Monarchs enter Sunday's dual meet after placing two wrestlers at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Northwestern, while three ODU grapplers registered top-four finishes at the Lock Haven Classic last week.
At the Midlands, Jack Dechow secured a runner-up finish at 184 after knocking off defending NCAA Champion Myles Martin of Ohio State in the quarterfinals and taking down 11th-ranked Nick Gravina of Rutgers in the semis before falling to returning NCAA finalist TJ Dudley of Nebraska by a narrow 4-2 decision in the finals.
Kevin Beazley posted a 3-0 record and a 5-2 victory over returning All-American Brett Harner from Princeton en route to a semifinal berth, but the Monarch 197-pounder medically forfeited to a sixth-place finish.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles enter Sunday's dual meet after competing in the Midlands Championships last week, where heavyweight Gage Hutchison recorded a fourth-place finish. The Eagles are 3-1 in dual meets so far this season with wins over Olivet College, Clarion and Cleveland State. EMU's lone dual meet loss came at the hands of Indiana, 25-12, on Dec. 11. The Eagles will open up the MAC dual meet slate this Friday at 7 p.m. vs. Ohio.
Eastern Michigan has two wrestlers nationally ranked in this week's InterMat poll, as freshman Noah Gonser surfaced at No. 18 at 125 and junior 285-pounder Gage Hutchison rose to No. 14 after his fourth-place performance at Midlands.
Sunday's dual meet can be watched live through Eastern Michigan's athletic website here ($).
The Monarchs return to Hampton Roads for the 37th annual Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum on Jan. 13-14.
