NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 12 Old Dominion University coed sailing team earned a pair of wins over nationally ranked foes en route to an eighth place finish at the 15th annual Aaron Szamebecki Team Race on the Elizabeth River over the weekend.
Old Dominion earned a win over second-ranked Georgetown and No. 16 Dartmouth in a stout eight-team field but went just 2-12 overall to finish in eighth place. Seniors Dillon Paiva and Zachary Runci along with freshman Esteban Forrer were the skippers for the Monarchs while the crew consisted of juniors Chloe Constants, Jill Fattibene and Julia Wiesner.
No. 3 Stanford won the event, going 11-3 followed by No. 5 College of Charleston (10-4), No. 2 Georgetown (9-5) No. 7 St. Mary's (9-6), No. 6 Boston College (8-7), No. 16 Dartmouth (5-9) and No. 10 Navy (3-11).
Saturday consisted of warm temperatures but little wind in the middle of the day so racing was limited. Sunday saw colder temperatures and rain but plenty of wind allowing for competition to be completed.
Old Dominion is off next weekend and will scrimmage at home before return to action on April 6 at the Prosser Trophy/MASIA Team Race in Geneva, N.Y.
