Monarch Tennis Suffers First Defeat Of Season

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The 42nd ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team opened up its home schedule with a 5-2 victory over #75 Old Dominion at the Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons improve to 3-3 on the season while handing the Monarchs (4-1) their first dual meet defeat.

Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Derrick Spice and Brett Ross continued their hot play, defeating Izak van der Merwe and Niklas Oskarsson at No. 1, 8-6. Andrew Hamar and Todd Paul paired for an 8-4 win at No. 2 while Andrew Simpson and David Loewenthal finished off the Monarchs with an 8-6 win at No. 3.

In singles play, Derrick Spice upset ODU's 13th ranked van der Merwe, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Van der Merwe entered the match ranked 13th in the nation. Oskarsson and Zoltan Csanadi took home the two Monarch victories. Csanadi downed #7 Andrew Hamar, 6-4, 6-7(6), 10-6 at No. 2 singles, while Oskarsson picked up a No. 4 singles win, 7-5, 4-6, 3-3 (12), against Brett Ross.

The Monarchs return to action on Friday, February 20th when they host St. John's at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News.
