#10 Missouri Rolls Over Old Dominion, 43-6
Jan. 8, 2002
Norfolk, VA-The tenth-ranked Missouri Tigers rolled to a quick and nearly flawless dual meet win over Old Dominion this evening, 43-6. Monarch senior Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) prevented a Tiger sweep with a pin at 174, picking up his 16th win of the season and fifth against a nationally-ranked opponent.
The Tigers improve to 6-0 while the Monarchs slip to 0-4.
Missouri started off with an early 6-0 lead as Mark Bader and Chris McCormick picked up hard-fought decisions over ODU's John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA) and Paul Jimenez (Norfolk, VA) at 125 and 133, respectively. The Tigers then blew things open by claiming a pin, a technical fall and a decision in the next three matches, leaving little doubt as to the final outcome.
Overall, Missouri claimed four pins and two technical falls throughout the match.
The evening's main event was the 174 lb. match between ODU's fifth-ranked Jeff Rusak and Missouri's tenth-ranked John Kopnisky. Trailing 3-1, Rusak was finally able to reel in his opponent and pin him at the 6:23 mark of the third period, preserving his three-year unbeaten streak in dual meet competition.
It was a small measure of redemption for the ODU senior, who suffered a 3-2 loss to Kopnisky in last year's Mat-Town final.
Rusak is currently 16-1 with seven pins to his credit in 2001-2002. His career record now stands at 116-18.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, January 20th, when they take part in the Virginia Intercollegiate Championships in Charlottesville, VA.
