Guerrero and Murphy Named To All-State Golf Squad

NORFOLK, VA-- Old Dominion University men's golfer's Stan Guerrero and John Murphy have been named to the second team All-State squad as selected by the Virginia Golf Coaches Association.

The University of Virginia's head men's golf coach Bowen Sargent was named Virginia Collegiate Golf Coach-of-the Year. The First Team All-State squad consists of Jurrian van der Vaart and Drew Weaver from Virginia Tech along with Vincent Nadeau of VCU, Jordan Utley of Richmond and Brent Paladino of William and Mary.

Guerrero, a senior was the ODU Alumni Association's Male Athlete of the Year and team MVP. He registered a 73.45 stroke average which ranked in the top ten of the CAA. He was the Monarchs top golfer in four events and as named first team All-CAA.

Murphy took second at the Hartford and Mid Pines tournaments in back-to-back weeks. He also placed fourth a the Cavalier and eighth at the CAA Championships Murphy compiled a 73.2 stroke average.

The Virginia Cavaliers, the only unranked team in the field, placed 26th at the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, IN, and 10th at the NCAA East Regionals at Chattanooga, TN.

Jurrian van der Vaart, a senior from Alemio, the Netherlands, completed his career at Virginia Tech with a ninth place finish at the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. He led the Hokies in scoring average at 71.53 and was a Third-Team All-America selection by the Golf Coaches Association of America and an honorable mention All-America by Golfweek.

Drew Weaver, the 2007 British Amateur Champion, is a rising senior from High Point, NC. He was second on the team in scoring average at 72.56 and played in the 2008 Masters, as well as the 2008 Memorial Tournament and the AT&T National, both on the PGA Tour.

Vincent Nadeau, a rising junior from Penhook, Va., posted a 72.66 stroke average. He won the Palisades Intercollegiate and the Frank Landrey Invitational. He finished in the top 10 in two other tournaments.

Jordan Utley, a senior from Richmond, Va., captured the ODU/Seascape Collegiate and compiled a 72.77 stroke average. He also placed fourth at the Atlantic 10 Championships and had six top ten finishes this year.

Brent Paladino, a native of Kensington, Conn. was the Tribes top player throughout the season with a 71.88 stroke average. He is the first player in school history to average under 73 strokes. Paladino placed second at the CAA Championships and earned Mid-Atlantic All-Region honors by PING/GCAA.

Joining Murphy and Guerrero on the Second Team All-State were Will Collins and Steven Rojas from Virginia; and Nick MacDonald from Virginia Tech.
