Norfolk, Va. – Old Dominion University head football coach Bobby Wilder announced today that the Monarchs have added five student-athletes who will join the team when classes resume on Jan. 10. All five players, four of which are coming from junior colleges, are immediately eligible to participate in all football related activities including winter conditioning and spring drills.
“We are excited with the student-athletes that will be joining the Old Dominion family for the spring semester,” said Wilder. “Our assistant coaches did an outstanding job identifying good people, good students, and good athletes. The goal of bringing in prep school and junior college players is to add experience to our young team. We targeted specific positions our coaching staff felt would benefit our current players and our team as a whole. I am grateful to the many people associated with Old Dominion who continue to provide support to our program. President Broderick and his staff, our deans and many professors, Athletic Director Jim Jarrett and all the good people in our athletic administration have been a major part of the success we are currently having in the recruiting process. As the mother of one of our incoming players said to me when her son chose Old Dominion over many other fine institutions, ‘We felt like we were at home’”.
The Monarchs focus was along the offensive line where three of the signees will see time, while a linebacker and a defensive end round out the list.
One of the signees, James Rainey, is a local product giving ODU a total of 34 players on its roster from the Hampton Roads area. Rainey, who originally signed with the Monarchs last February, was a first team All-Beach District selection on offense and defense for the Dolphins of Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach.
The Monarchs may sign additional junior college players through Jan. 15 when the signing period ends.
