Wrestling Drops Regular-Season Finale to Virginia, 25-11

Highlights From Today's Match

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University wrestling won three of the first four matches but Virginia won the final six to pull out a 25-11 win Sunday evening at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

James Nicholson got the Monarchs on the board first with a 12-3 major decision of Matt Snyder at 125 pounds. Nicholson, who is now 29-0 on the year, started the match with a takedown just 35 seconds in. Snyder was able to escape but Nicholson got two more takedown in the period. Nicholson to begin the second period and scored another takedown to take a 9-2 lead. Nicholson got another escape to begin the third and a final takedown to complete the victory.

In perhaps the most exciting match of the night, Kyle Hutter escaped with a 10-8 decision over Joe Spisak. Hutter started out fast with a takedown just 12 seconds in, but Spisak was able to escape. Spisak countered with a takedown of his own and turned over Hutter for three nearfall points. Hutter was able to get off his back and escape with two seconds to go in the period, as Spisak took a 6-3 first period lead. Hutter escaped to begin the third and tied the match with a takedown. Hutter allowed Spisak to escape and picked up another takedown to earn the victory.

Nick Nelson picked up three takedowns to earn a 7-2 decision over Brennan Brumley to get Virginia on the board, cutting the ODU lead to 7-3.

Old Dominion increased its lead to 11-3 with Scott Festejo picking up a 15-6 major decision over Dave Ebbott. Festejo came out on fire in the first period, scoring three takedown and getting three nearfall points as the first period buzzer sounded. Festejo added another takedown in the second and staved off a comeback from Ebbott for the major decision.

Shawn Harris got the comeback started for the Cavaliers with a victory at 157 as UVA won the final six weight classes.

The Monarchs aren't back in action until March 4 when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. to compete in the CAA Tournament.
