Shanon Slack Places Fifth at UNC-G Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, NC -Junior Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA) placed fifth in the 141 weight class to pace the Old Dominion wrestling team at the UNC-Greensboro Southern Scuffle Dec. 29-30. The Monarchs, as a team, finished 14th with 23.5 points.

Freshman Selas Douglas (Lorton, VA/125) dropped a 17-0 tech fall (2:53) to North Carolina's Bobby Shaw before dropping a 10-2 major decision to Virginia's Anthony Burke in consolations.

Freshman B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/133) dropped his first round match, losing 6-2 to Gardner-Webb's Josh Pniewski before picking up two wins during consolations. Compton defeated VMI's Tyler Anthony by fall (4:22) and also defeated the Citadel's Michael Arlas by a fall at the 1:03 mark. Compton medical forfeited his next match against Virginia's Byron Dunlop.

At 141 pounds, Shanon Slack defeated UNC-Greensboro's Tripp Rogers by a 11-5 decision in the first round before falling to #7 seed Charlie Agozzino of Cornell 12-9. In consolations, Slack won five of six matches to place fifth. Slack defeated Rider's Bobby Stinson 12-6, Lock Haven's Brian Ellis 6-4, Maryland's Charlie Pinto by a 14-5 major decision and Cornell's Matt Easter 5-3. Slack dropped a 5-2 decision to Edinboro's Ron Doppelheur before defeated Minnesota's Manuel Rivera 5-3 in the fifth place bout.

At 149 pounds, freshman Hunter Davenport (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) defeated Duke's Antwone Floyd 5-4 in the first round before dropping to the Citadel's Levi Duyn 8-6. In consolations, Davenport defeated the Citadel's Mike Martinez 8-6 and Cornell's Mike Reish by a fall at the 2:13 mark before dropping to Navy's John Cox, 9-4. Cox is ranked #10 nationally.

Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/157) defeated Chris Rensen by a 16-0 tech fall (4:21) in the first round in the 157 weight class, before dropping to Lock Haven's Seth Martin by a 13-5 major decision. In consolations, Pullano defeated UNC-Greensboro's Mark Ring 6-3, but was defeated by Virginia's Jim Hartey by a fall in overtime, at the 6:36 mark.

At 165, Rob Gosnell (Warrenton, VA) and James Conyers (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) represented the Monarchs. Gosnell defeated Appalachian State's Ajay Foreman by a 3-1 decision in the first round before losing to Navy's Deon Barrett 10-7 in the second. In consolations, Gosnell defeated UNC-Greensboro's Charles Jones by fall (5:42) but lost to Cornell's Joey Hooker 9-5. James Conyers was defeated by the Citadel's Dan Thompson by a 11-2 major decision in the first round before suffering a 9-1 major decision loss to Kent State's Nick Brenner in consolations.

Senior John Adams (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek/174) dropped his first round match against East Stroudsberg State's John Carr by a 10-5 decision before winning two of three in consolations. Adams defeated UNC-Greensboro's Freddy Valoy by a 10-0 major decision and Navy's Cody Rapp by a 8-2 decision before falling to Cornell's Luke Hogle 4-1.

Shea Smith (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood/184) lost to Navy's Antonio Miranda by fall (5:41) in the first round before medical forfeiting his consolation match against Navy's Chris Pogue.

At 197, freshman Andrew Jordan (Newark, DE) lost to Rider's Nick Cuifo by a fall at the 2:37 mark before losing to Minnesota's Jon Duncombe by a fall at the 3:04 mark in consolations.
