Men's Tennis Team Ranked 54th In ITA Poll

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team is ranked 54th in the country according to the latest ITA Poll released on Tuesday. Among the individual rankings, sophomore Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) ranks No. 7 and senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is ranked at No. 18, while in doubles Cancado and Srugo are ranked at No. 6.
Srugo jumped 11 places from his preseason No. 18 ranking after capturing a 15-4 fall tournament singles record. Among his accomplishments during the fall was the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional singles title, the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championship, the quarterfinals of the Southern Intercollegiates, and the Round of 32 at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships. Additionally, Srugo posted a 9-3 record against competition featured in the ITA preseason rankings.
Cancado returns to the rankings in his highest ranking of his career after appearing at No. 99 in last season's preseason poll. Cancado earned a 13-6 fall tournament record as he was a finalist at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional, quarterfinalist at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, and participated at the ITA Indoor National Championships and qualifying bracket at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships. He posted a 5-5 mark against opponents ranked in the preseason poll.
Srugo and Cancado made a gigantic leap in the polls after being ranked at No. 52 during the preseason. During the fall schedule, the ODU duo recorded a 11-4 mark posting a 9-3 record against preseason ranked opponents. Together they reached the semifinals of the UVA Fall Classic and the quarterfinals of the Southern Intercollegiates. Additionally they reached the main draw of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships from the qualifying bracket, winning the consolation bracket of the main draw.
Six Monarch opponents join Old Dominion in the team rankings. This spring, the Monarchs will take on No. 7 Duke, No. 8 Virginia, No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth, No. 24 Wake Forest, No. 37 North Carolina State, and No. 67 Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Old Dominion will kick off the spring season on January 19th when they host George Washington at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News at 1:00 p.m..
