Sept. 2, 2001
Norfolk, VA-The Old Dominion women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season today with a 3-2 overtime win against Radford. ODU is now 1-1 while Radford falls to 0-1 on the season.
Radford got on the board first just ten minutes into the game, when Kate Hensman took a pass from teammate Susan Melanson and beat Lady Monarch goalie Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD). Old Dominion answered twenty-two minutes later, when freshman midfielder Maura Linz (Prospect, KY) connected on a long shot from outside of the Radford box.
Both sides turned up the offense in the second half. Radford's Nikki Porter put the Highlanders ahead again in the 65th minute when she took advantage of a defensive miscue in front of the ODU net. Melanie McGovern (Somerdale, NJ) tied the game again with her first goal of season with just ten minutes remaining, and the two teams went into overtime. Just thirty seconds into sudden death, senior forward Jen Henley (Chalfont, PA) netted the golden goal to give the Lady Monarchs their first victory.
Old Dominion held a 15-9 advantage in shots, while Radford held a 5-4 edge in corners.
The Lady Monarchs will be in action again on Friday, September 7, when they host #12 Clemson at 7 p.m.
