Van Der Merwe Heads To NCAA's

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected the 64 singles players that will compete in the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships and among the participants will be Old Dominion's senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa).
The singles competition will be conducted May 25-30 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 21-24).
Van der Merwe, named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year for the second straight season, posted a 23-11 overall singles record, including a 14-7 mark in dual matches this spring. Ranked #37 in the nation by the ITA, the senior reached the semifinals of ITA National Indoors and made the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Main Draw. Van der Merwe recorded victories over five ranked opponents in spring dual meet competition.
Last season, he earned All-America honors in doubles after reaching the semifinals at the NCAA Championship and he advanced to the Round of 16 in singles. During his singles run he picked up victories over Adriano Biasella of Southern California in the first round and #35 Robert Searle of Rice in the second round, before falling to #31 Chad Harris of Vanderbilt.
