RICHMOND, Va. - The Old Dominion's men's tennis team picked up three big awards at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) banquet on Thursday evening on the eve of their tournament run. Senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) was named the CAA's Co-Player of the Year, while newcomer Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil )was named Co-Rookie of the Year, and Old Dominion head coach Darryl Cummings picked up CAA Coach of the Year.

Van der Merwe earned CAA Player of the Year honors for the second straight season after posting a 23-10 overall singles record, including a 14-6 mark in dual matches this spring. Ranked #33 in the nation by the ITA, the senior reached the semifinals of ITA National Indoors and made the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Main Draw. Van der Merwe recorded victories over five ranked opponents in spring dual meet competition. Last season, he earned All-America honors in doubles after reaching the semifinals at the NCAA Championship and he advanced to the third round in singles.

Igarashi joined the Monarchs this spring and played his way to a 16-8 overall record including a 13-7 mark at No. 3 singles. In CAA competition, he went 3-1.

Cummings guided the men's team to a 13-11 overall mark this spring and a #62 ranking in the latest ITA Poll. The Monarchs also registered a 3-1 CAA mark which included a 4-1 victory over then #35 Virginia Commonwealth, giving the Rams their first lost to ODU since the 1989-90 season and the only the second loss to a CAA opponent since VCU joined the league during the 1995-96 campaign.

Also earning All-CAA honors for the Old Dominion men's tennis team were sophomore Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) and sophomore Henrique Cancado ( Belo Horizonte, Brazil).

Grover teamed with van der Merwe to pick up Second Team All-CAA accolades in doubles. Together the duo earned a 10-8 overall mark, including a 5-4 mark in both fall tournament action and the spring dual meet season. During the fall, the two combined to reach the quarterfinals of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Main Draw after coming out of the qualifying bracket.

Cancado played his way to a 22-11 overall mark and 15-6 dual meet record playing primarily at No. 2 singles to earn Second Team All-CAA honors.
