NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University sailing head coach Mitch Brindley has announced the addition of Cara Vavolotis as the newest addition to his coaching staff. Vavolotis comes to Norfolk after serving as an assistant varsity sailing coach at Eckerd College last year.
"We are thrilled to have Cara as part of the Monarch team," said Brindley. "Old Dominion has been fortunate to have a line of great coaches from the Monarch family. This is the first time we have hired an assistant sailing coach who wasn't an alumnus. Cara brings a great deal of fresh talent to our coaching team, and I am excited to start working with her."
Vavolotis was a four-year standout on the Eckerd sailing team and as a senior in 2010 she was named Honorable Mention All-American. Additionally, Vavolotis was selected as Eckerd's Women's Skipper of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2010.
"I'm very excited to join the coaching staff at Old Dominion, a program that I regard as one of the top programs in the nation," said Vavolotis. "I hope to bring my experience as a past college sailor and coach to the Monarchs, while also bringing enthusiasm to the team."
As an assistant coach with Eckerd in 2011, Vavolotis guided the Tritons to berths in both the ICSA/Gill Co-ed National Championships and the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women's finals.
The ODU sailing team kicks off its season September 10-11. The Monarchs will host the Riley Cup in Norfolk and travel to Annapolis, Md. for the Navy Radial Open and the Navy Laser South #1.
