#1 VCU To Meet #3 ODU in CAA Men's Tennis Championship Match

RICHMOND, VA - Top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth will meet #3 seed Old Dominion on Sunday morning in the finals of the 2002 CAA Men's Tennis Championship at Byrd Park. The Monarchs advanced to the title game after a thrilling 4-3 upset victory over #2 seed William and Mary.

The Tribe captured the doubles' point after the #1 team of Sean Kelleher/Geoff Russell defeated the Monarchs' Zoltan Csanadi/Izak van der Merwe, 8-3, and the W&M #3 team of Jeff Kader/Alex Fish beat ODU's Calin Milos/Patrik Binkowski, 8-2.

The singles' competition between the two squads saw five of the six matches go to three sets. With the competition tied at 3-3, Csanadi clinched the victory for ODU with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Kelleher at number one singles. The Monarchs also got wins from #3 Calin Milos, who defeated Kader 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), #5 Salman Mohammed, who beat W&M's Zack Malmgren 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and #6 Niklas Oskarsson, who knocked off Alex Fish 6-1, 6-3. The Tribe got singles victories from #2 Russell, who defeated van der Merwe 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and #4 Joe Brooks, who beat Binkowski 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

In the second semifinal, VCU, which is ranked 18th nationally in the latest Omni Hotel Collegiate Tennis Rankings, didn't lose a set to 4th-ranked UNCW. The Rams earned the doubles point after getting wins from #1 Pedro Nieto/Florian Marquardt over UNCW's Danilo Mendes/Lee Bailey, 8-5 and #2 Marton Ott/Mats Norin over Scott Curry/Josh Franceschina, 8-0.

In singles, top-seeded Nieto rolled past Mendes 6-1, 6-0, #5 seed Fernando Sanchez beat Franceschina 6-2, 6-2 and #6 seed Julien Lousao defeated Scott Curry 6-3, 6-3.

In Sunday's 10 a.m. finals, VCU will be looking to claim its seventh consecutive CAA championship, while ODU will try to earn its first crown since 1994. The two squads met in the finals for three consecutive seasons from 1996-98, with the Rams winning 4-0 each time. VCU beat ODU 5-2 when the two teams faced off earlier this season.
