Monarch Results From Day Two Of East Coast Championships

NORFOLK, VA -- All but one Monarch tennis entry in Saturday's contests at the East Coast Championships on Saturday afternoon advanced in their respective brackets.

Junior Zoltan Csanadi (Timisoara, Romania), senior Patrik Binkowsi (Orby, Sweden), junior Niklas Oskarsson (Halmstad, Sweden), and senior Salman Mohammed (Calcutta, India) each advanced to semifinal rounds in their singles brackets. Csanadi, who is looking to retain his East Coast Championship title, used a 6-2, 6-2 win over Campbell's Jiri Beranke to reach the semifinals of the Flight A singles bracket. Csanadi will face UMBC's Josef Novotny on Sunday.

Binkowsi, Mohammed, and Oskarsson will all play in the semifinals of the Flight B singles bracket. Binkowski and Mohammed will play each other, while Oskarsson takes on Stephen Rozek of Virginia. Binkowski reached the semis will a hard fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win against Scott Peters of Maryland. Mohammed also defeated a member of the Terp tennis team to advance, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win over David Reichsfeld. Oskarsson advanced to the semifinal round with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Zorick Toltsan of Campbell.

In other singles action, sophomore Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) dropped his Flight A singles quarterfinal match-up with Hofstra's Nikola Djordjevic in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Three Monarch doubles teams also continue action on Sunday in the semifinals. The duo of Patrik Binkowsi and junior Calin Milos (Timisoara, Romania) will square off against teammate Izak van der Merwe and freshman Adriano Mello (Londrina, Brazil) in the semifinals of the Flight A doubles bracket. Binkowski and Milos advanced following a first round bye and a 9-7 victory over CAA foes Nikola Djordjevic of Hofstra. Van der Merwe and Mello posted a 9-7 victory over Hampton Roads rivals Jukub Novak and Daniel Prokes of Norfolk State in the opening round and then followed with a 9-7 win over Felipe Castanheir and Andres Intriago of Lees McRae to reach the semis.

In the Flight B doubles bracket, partners Salman Mohammed and Niklas Oskarsson will face Richmond's Derek Schwandt and Dan Scrafford in the semifinals. The duo reached Sunday's semifinal with wins over UMBC's Mikhail Kouznetsov and James Tyler (9-8 (4)) and Campbell's Sas Ljumic and Sergio Tejado (8-4).
