NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's rowing team had a beautiful day to host the University of Miami in hosting its first races on the Lafayette River since the official opening Women's Intercollegiate Rowing Center. The Lady Monarch swept all three races with ODU's Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, and Varsity 4 boats all victorious.
"I couldn't be prouder of the effort that our Lady Monarchs put in today," said head coach Dan Garbutt. "Its definitely the results of a lot of hard work, preparation and having the full benefit of having this facility (ODU's Women's Intercollegiate Rowing Center) to train out of this winter."
The Varsity 8 finished with a 10.7 second margin over Miami's boat with the Lady Monarchs' rowing to a first place time of 6:47.9.
The 2nd Varsity 8 race saw the Lady Monarchs take an early lead. Although the Hurricanes managed to close the gap midway through the race, Old Dominion pulled out a three second victory claiming first place with a time of 7:22.0.
This was the second time the Lady Monarchs have taken to the water against Miami this season having competed against the Hurricanes in the fall at the Head of the Hooch. Garbutt noted that Saturday's results showed vast improvement in squad from winter workouts. At the Head of the Hooch, Miami's Open 8+ took fourth place in the race, over 30 seconds ahead of the Lady Monarchs.
The Old Dominion women's rowing team returns to action at Knect Cup in Cherry Hill, NJ, April 8-10.
