March 18, 2003
NORFOLK, VA -- Old Dominion women's lacrosse swept the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) weekly awards as senior attack Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) was named Player of the Week and freshman goalkeeper Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) was named the conference's Rookie of the Week.
Hensil had a huge hand in Old Dominion's 3-0 record last week, which included two wins against teams ranked in the IWLCA Top 20 and two CAA conference victories. Hensil tallied three goals in each game, staring with a 12-10 victory over #20 Richmond. She scored the game-winner in the 8-6 triumph over George Mason for the Lady Monarchs first win in CAA play and then netted another game-winner with 17 seconds remaining in a 13-12 thriller against #10 James Madison. In all, Hensil tallied nine goals, 10 points, seven groundballs, five draws, and three caused turnovers on the week.
Gannon posted 32 saves and a .533 save percentage in protecting the Lady Monarchs in the three wins. She stopped a season-high 17 shots on net as Old Dominion pulled out an 8-6 win over George Mason in the CAA season opener. The six goals were also the fewest scored against the Lady Monarchs thus far this season. She had 11 saves against Richmond as ODU knocked off the #20 Spiders 12-10 on Wednesday. Gannon has played all 360 minutes in goal this season and holds a 11.0 goals against average and a .472 save percentage.
Old Dominion is off to a 5-1 start, its best start since its inaugural season back in 1980 when the Lady Monarchs opened 6-1. The Lady Monarchs moved up from receiving votes to #16 in this week's IWLCA Poll. Old Dominion will return to action on Saturday when they host #2 Maryland at 1:00 p.m.
