Columbia, Mo. - Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/Turner Ashby) had the most eventful day of any Old Dominion wrestler at the Missouri Open on Sunday at the University of Missouri.  Wright, unseeded, finished second at 184 pounds and had one of the day's biggest upsets, knocking off the second seed, Matt Pell of host Missouri.

The first-round draw against Pell, ranked fifth in the nation by InterMat, didn't seem to be a problem as Wright beat the Tiger wrestler 11-7. Wright went on to defeat Indiana's Justin Curran (14-8) and Illinois' Matt Harding (3-1) before squaring off with defending Southern Conference champion John Davis of Chattanooga.  Davis upset third-seeded Ben Wissell, ranked seventh nationally, in the quarterfinals, but Wright scored a big 12-3 major decision to advance to the final. In the final, top-seeded Brian Glynn of Illiniois, a returning all-American and ranked third in the nation, beat Wright by a 13-3 major decision.

Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) started off strong, earning a 18-2 technical fall over Purdue's Brandon Tucker before falling to Illinois' Gabe Flores 6-4 in the semifinals. Staylor rebounded, beating Missouri's Tim Kephart 8-6 in the consolation semifinals and scored an 11-1 major decision over Cumberland College's Delrico Choates in the third place bout. Staylor's match with Kephart was a rematch of the 2001 Cadet National Freestyle Championships, which Staylor won as a rising junior in high school.

Robby Gosnell (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) had a solid outing at 165, finishing fourth. The junior reached the semifinals with victories over Chattanooga's Dan Peterson (14-6) and the fourth-seed Rocky Vercher of NAIA Lindenwood. Gosnell lost 7-3 in the quarters to three-time Division II national champion Waylon Lowe. Lowe, who's NCAA eligibility expired last season, entered the tournament for the Davey Crockett Wrestling Club. He trains in Chattanooga. Winning two matches in the consolations (4-3 over MacMurray College's Chris Henry and 7-6 over Peterson) before earning a forfeit victory over Oklahoma's Wes Roberts to advance to the consolation final. Purdue's John Deceault beat Gosnell 5-0 for third.

Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) went 3-2 at 141 pounds, but lost his opening round bout to Chattanooga's Michael Keefe, whom he had beaten two weeks earlier for third place at the West Virginia Open. Slack rebounded, beating unattached Jack Wadley 13-1, MacMurray's Adam Kravits 10-4, and pinning another MacMurray wrestler, Ryan Skolosinski in 2:58. Eventual fifth-place finisher Josh Pulsipher of Missouri Valley, ended Slack's day with a 7-5 victory.

Freshman B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg) was the only Monarch wrestler to compete in the very large freshman and sophomore division, finishing third at 133 pounds. Compton won his first two bouts, an 8-2 win over Missouri Valley's Tarl Vickers and a fall in 2:25 over MacMurray's Ryan Parrish before falling 3-2 to Missouri Valley's Jon Gerhold. Compton got hot in the consolations, winning four straight matches, including avenging his third-round loss to Gerhold in the third-place match.

The Monarchs take to the mats on Saturday at the Mat Town USA Invitational at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania. Competing teams at Mat Town are: American, Buffalo, Clarion, Indiana, Lock Haven, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio U, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rider, Slippery Rock, and Virginia.
