No. 52 Men's Tennis Defeats No. 74 Michigan State, 5-2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The No. 52 Old Dominion men's tennis team collected a 5-2 win over No. 74 Michigan State Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Action started with the Monarchs coming from behind to take the doubles point. Michigan State claimed No. 3 doubles, but Old Dominion came back to earn the point by earning victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 position. The country's sixth-ranked team in ODU's Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) and Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) edged out No. 29 Nick Rinks and Adam Monich, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while the ODU duo of Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) and Alex Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic) downed the Spartan's Michael Flowers and Alex Forger, 8-6.

In singles, the Monarchs took home wins in four of the day's six singles matches. After the Spartan's Nick Rinks upset No. 7 Harel Srugo at No. 1 singles to tie the match score at 1-1, Henrique Cancado put the Monarchs ahead for good in the match as he played his way to a straight set, 6-2, 6-2 win over Alex Forger at No. 2 singles. Cancado's victory was followed by Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) earning a win at the No. 5 position. Behind 2-6 after the first set, Souza won the next two allowing Michigan State's Mike Flowers to earn just one game, 6-1, 6-0. Alex Seleznev gave the Monarchs a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles over Adam Munich and Yakov Diskin (Yorktown, Va.) rounded out the ODU victories with a 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2 win at No. 6 singles against Jason Norville.

The Monarch men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, February 16th when they host Howard at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News.
